Troubleshooting
This page contains two troubleshooting guides that help with buttons not registering and battery capacity problems that the average user may eventually experience.
Background
The Punkt company was founded in 2008 in Switzerland with the second iteration of their "dumbphone," Punkt MP02, being released in 2018. They created this device to combat screen addiction and marketed it towards an audience who wanted pure function in a reliable, small form factor. Its designer Jasper Morrison emphasized functionality and simplicity when creating its form. The device includes a private messaging software called Pigeon, which encrypts the user's messages and metadata. Punkt sold the MP02 for roughly $379 when it launched, but the device now sells for $299 on their website.
The predecessor to the MP02 is the MP01, which included much of the same footprint and functionality while only being capable of 2G cellular service. Unlike the MP01 which only allows SMS and calls, the MP02 allows for tethering/hotspots, encrypted signal messaging, and various other quality of life improvements. The biggest failure or weak point of this device seems to be its battery. The battery life seems to degrade relatively quickly, or in some cases the battery will swell and become unsafe to operate. The battery issues paired with “laggy” software seem to be the two biggest gripes from its customer base. The model that will succeed the MP02 is the MC03. It has yet to be released, but it is essentially an upgrade in multiple ways (5G connectivity, touchscreen capability) with an added emphasis on complete user security and privacy.
Identification
Coming in 3 distinct colors (black, blue, and gray), the device can easily be identified by its angular, minimalist design including a 2-inch display and a 12 key keypad. The back of the device should include an identification label phrased “MP02” or “MP02A” with the “Punkt” logo on the front under the screen. Unlike other phones, it does not include a front or rear facing camera. The device will operate through a vertical, text-based menu and come with Pigeon software pre-installed.
