Tools
These are some common tools used to work on this device. You might not need every tool for every procedure.
Background
Originally released by Hewlett-Packard in 2008, and officially discontinued in 2012, it was designed for “information snacking”, basic web browsing, checking emails, and light productivity. The Mini 1000 was the first in the Mini line marking a shift from expensive first-generation experiments to highly customizable, budget friendly netbooks.
While sold globally, in certain regions including Europe it was sold under the Compaq brand. HP utilized a localized suffix lettering system at the end of specific model numbers, such as nr for North America and ne for the Middle East, to differentiate regional variations. Intended for mobile professionals, students, and casual users it was originally priced at $399.99 and dropped over time, and can now be found for $30 - $60 secondhand.
Aside from standard aging hardware, some common component failures include the power adapter port and the integrated microphone array. The power port is known to be fragile and prone to breaking or failing to make a proper connection with the motherboard over time. The integrated microphone array frequently suffers from hardware failures and and poor audio capture quality.
Identification
The HP Mini 1000 measures 10.3 x 6.6 x 0.9 inches (261.6 x 166.6 x 25.13 mm). It is on the lighter side weighing between 2.25 and 2.4 pounds (about 1 kg) depending on the specific configuration. The screen is usually 8.9 inches, while some have a 10.2 inch widescreen screen.
The HP Mini comes in two different colors, the standard color-way is a glossy black called “piano black” and a special edition collaboration with designer Vivienne Tam that comes in “imperial red”, a red model with a purple floral design on the laptop’s base panel.
Some distinct features include a swirl design imprint on the top lid of the piano black models, front sliding switches, a unique trackpad layout, an edge-to-edge large keyboard, and a proprietary usb slot. Instead of buttons on the keyboard, the power switch and WiFi toggle are individual sliding switches located on the very front edge of the chassis, complete with integrated LED status lights. To maintain a compact design, the trackpad buttons are uniquely placed to the left and right sides of the trackpad buttons pad rather than below it. The layout includes a keyboard that is larger than most standard desktop keyboards, taking up almost the entire width of the lower deck. The proprietary usb slot is built directly into the chassis to house specialized mini storage drives.
The exact model number or specific configuration designation is printed on a service sticker affixed to the bottom exterior case of the device. On some sub-models, the regulatory and precise product markings are hidden beneath a removable bottom panel vanity cover or tucked inside the removable battery compartment to keep the exterior look clean.
