@caseyteska use the Inspiron 15 5000 Series Service Manual and go to page 50. There you will see what all needs to be done to remove the heat sink assembly. Once it is removed use something like this guide Dell Inspiron 15 5584 CPU Thermal Paste Replacement to replace the thermal paste. It is a different model but the same idea.

How to apply thermal paste properly:

  1. Clean off old paste (use isopropyl alcohol 90%+).
  2. Make sure both the CPU and heatsink are dry and dust-free.
  3. Apply a small pea-sized dot in the center of the CPU.
  4. Place the heatsink straight down and tighten evenly.
  5. Don’t spread it manually — the pressure spreads it evenly.

Too much paste can cause overheating. Too little won’t transfer heat properly.
