Background
Produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation is the official game console brand of Sony. The original PlayStation was released in 1994 and was designed to compete against other consoles such as the Sega Saturn and the later-released Nintendo 64. The original PlayStation (and the smaller newer version, PS One) outsold all of its competitors with over 102 million units as of 2003 and eventually became the first gaming console to sell 120 million units worldwide. The success of the original PlayStation sparked the video game industry and led other technology companies (like Microsoft) to invest in the market. With the introduction of the Xbox line in the gaming industry, Microsoft soon joined Sony and Nintendo in becoming one of the three largest gaming companies in the world. These companies directly competed against each other with brand-new iterations of their gaming consoles, and the fans and media of each company started what is known as the ‘console wars.’
Despite the competition, Sony PlayStation consoles have historically dominated the market, and aside from the PlayStation Vita, all five of the other PlayStation consoles are in the top 10 selling consoles of all time. In total, PlayStation has sold over half of a billion units since 1994. The PlayStation 4 is the fastest-selling console of all time and reached a million units sold on its first day. Since 1994, Sony has made the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, each with its own slim revision, and the current PlayStation 5, which was released in November, 2022. The most recent console is the enhanced version of the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, which will be available starting November 7, 2024.
Identification
Sony TV consoles (PlayStations) are usually easily identifiable since the name is displayed right on the front or top of the unit. The label which lists the model number and device name can be found at the bottom or rear of the console.
