If the laptop is running but the screen is dark, try turning the brightness all the way up first. Shine a flashlight at the screen too. If you can barely see the picture, the backlight is probably the problem.
You can also try an external monitor. If that works, I’d suspect the laptop screen, cable, or backlight rather than the computer itself.
