First off do you have a WiFi connection (Access Point) within your Internet Router? You need to start there, you could use a public Hot Spot but that's a bit dangerous if you don't have a VPN software on your system to protect your system and what you are sending or reading online.
Depending on your exact HP Laptop series it should have a WiFi adapter built in! So all you need to do is find the password to connect to the Routers WiFi AP. And then just use a Web browser to access the Internet and maybe an email app to connect to a mail server once you've setup an account with them.
