The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC's full-size pickup truck line from 1960 until 1998 in the United States. "C" indicated two-wheel drive and "K" indicated four-wheel drive. The aging C/K light-duty pickup truck was replaced with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra names in 1999 in the United States.

Break light switch keeps going out

I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado and the break light switch keeps going out. All other light functions work. I have changed it 3 times and each time nothing physically looks wrong with the switch but the lights will not come on. What could cause this?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @bryandaley

If you still have one of the older brake light switches, use a DMM's (digital multimeter) Ohmmeter function to check if the switch is operating electrically OK or not when the switch is manually operated i.e. switch contacts should test 0.00 Ohms when the switch is operated and not OL (open circuit) which would indicate that the switch contacts have burnt out or aren't operating,

If the switch is OK then there's another reason why the brake lights don't work.

Does the switch assembly feel snug and not loose when it is pushed onto the operating rod on the brake pedal - view between 1:38 → 1:48 minutes into this video to see what I mean?

@jayeff Thanks for the information. I don’t have one of the old switches. The switch does fix snug.

The rear light’s weren’t working when I bought the truck. I had to replace the connectors and repair a ground at the lights. After I got the lights working, the break lights still wouldn’t come on. I replaced the break light switch and they worked for about a month. I replaced the switch again and they started working this time about a year. When they quit working. I replaced the switch again and they are working for now.

Hi @bryandaley

If it fails again and it's not the switch, here's the wiring diagram for the lights and the brake light switch that may help.
