Powers on but no video

So I have a Neo geo pro pow 3 and the power cable it came with works but gets very very hot and displays wavy picture. I bought a 9v power cord for retrogamecave as that’s the one he recommended. So when I plug it in just a black screen happens but when I plug in old cord I get video. Any idea why new power cord not working?

Hi @timbo11386

Did you verify that the new adapter is also a -ve (negative) centre pin and not the more common +ve (positive) centre pin adapter?

Here's a composite image showing how to identify which it is.

Yes it’s a 9v center negative from retrogamecave web site specifically for the Neo geo aes pro pow 3. Only real odd thing I found is in the picture with the voltage regulator it’s bridged so idk if that was intentional or not and would it affect anything?

If it's always been like that then what I think is that the manufacturer is using the transistor instead of a diode for precise voltage regulation or current mirroring i.e. stable reference current for the circuit as it may be cheaper for them to do it this way.

You may have to remove the transistor and test if it is still OK or if it has gone faulty given that the original adapter was getting hot .

The wire (if that's what it is) which crosses over the top of the regulator isn't touching any of the connections is it?

Looks like bare wire but maybe not but make sure that it is clear
