What year is the vehicle?
The check engine light is on because it's warning you that there's a problem with the engine or the transmission.
The only way to get rid of the light is to get the problem fixed. Once the problem is fixed the light will be off.
The easiest way to find out what's wrong is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with an appropriate scantool to see what DTC codes Index 1, Index 2 have been logged by the ECM (Engine Control Module).
The code will tell you what the problem is.
Major auto parts retail stores in the USA will do this for free apparently.
