The headset won’t turn on unless I connect them to a power source. Once they are on they do stay on until turned off. I’ve tried holding the button on for various lengths of time without success.

Try replacing the battery and check if that resolves the problem.
I realize that you said that it stays on with the power disconnected, after it has been turned on with the power connected, but it may be that the battery cannot supply enough power for the startup procedure i.e. turn on, turn on BT, locate and pair with host device etc but can once it has finished setting up.
