My pool is not heated but I would like for it to be so I can get more use out of it during the colder months in California. Is this something that I can install on my own and how difficult would it be and is there any additional pool equipment that I would need to purchase?

There are purpose built solar heating kits for swimming pools (examples) that you can buy so that you install it yourself. Maybe easier than MacGyvering it although the kits will give you some ideas as to what is required to solar heat a pool if you want to try ;-)
It depends on what suits your situation best i.e. size of pool, type and location of solar equipment required etc, and how easy it is for you to do it yourself.
