Heats up, shuts down
My laptop suddenly shuts down. I felt under it. HOT to the touch. I bought a cooling stand. It helped, for a while. Any cures come to mind?
Is this a good question?

An overheating and shutdown problem could be due to a dusty/clogged fan and that the thermal paste on the CPU has dried out and become less effective in transferring the heat from the CPU so that it can be extracted and blown out by the fan.
Check if the fan needs cleaning and the thermal paste on the CPU refreshed.
Here's a video that may help.
Here's the ifixit How to Apply Thermal Paste guide that may also help.
If you decide to do this I strongly recommend that once the laptop's back cover has been removed, that you disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard before commencing any other work inside the laptop, so as to prevent any electrical problems¹ from occurring due to tools accidentally slipping and touching components - short circuits and hands/fingers touching things they shouldn't i.e. ESD damage to sensitive electronic components. Wearing a wrist strap tied to an earth (ground) point is advisable. You don't have to remove the battery from the laptop, simply disconnect it. Here's a video that shows how to do this.
Remember to reconnect the battery cable to the motherboard, last thing after finishing the work and before replacing the back cover.
¹ There is always power somewhere on the motherboard when the battery is connected even if the laptop is switched off. The Laptop's Power button is not a power isolating switch. Its function is to signal the user's intentions to the BIOS/OS i.e. turn on, wake up, force shutdown
