Known as the ''PS2'', it is a sixth-generation video game console first released by Sony in Japan in March 2000. The United States saw it later in 2000 with the SCPH-30000. Repair of this device requires only common tools, but can get tricky.

PS1 games do not read

Recently ive gotten a ps1 game and it doesnt read at all. I have a scph 39004, I dont think I have an official laser on it, my brothers back in the day took it to a repair shop because ps2 games wernt reading. Ive never played ps1 games on it, It maybe was able to read it dunno. The disc as tiny scratches but its really smudged up PS2 games work fine.

Actually it read a few times when the device was warm to the touch around 1200-900 ohms on the CD pot (not sure exactly the resistance because i didnt know how to use the multimeter). It worked once at 840 on restart but not again.

Ive done alot of test, audioCDs work but the ps1 game doesnt work, ive tried 930, 860, 840, 760 and 700ohms audioCD work every time but the ps1 game doesnt. It always loads up the memory card menu when it fails, and stays spinning on consistent speed even after it fails, so its reading the disc but fails?

Update:

Apparently the console is pal but Ive opened it up before never saw a modchip, maybe there is one. Ive only played NTSC games on this never pal games. It endlessly reads the disc, but I got it to read a few times so im not sure if its because console is pal or some hardmode.

Also, if hot swap the disc and it reads does that mean anything? Cause if I place a ps2 game quickly eject the ps2 disc and the ps1 disc it reads it as a ps2 disc but doesnt load.

Hi!

I also was thinking about the CD pot meter. But since you have tried everything here, you most likely have a broken laser.

Please make sure if there is a modchip in it, if this one is failing, it could give issues like you are having.

If there is none, try to replace the laser and see how it goes.

Thanks I checked and there is a modchip its blue with M3 MP-388 does this work with ps1? Also, would it make sense to fail on ps1 games and not ps2 games? Im honestly leaning towards the disc but doesnt seem to scratched up.

Edit: Another thing could I use mechapwn with the modchip installed, if its an issue with the modchip itself?

Hi!

I would remove the modchip and try again. The PS2 should play PS1 games with or without the modchip.

If the modchip is removed and you are still facing issues, replace the laser.

I can’t help you with the modding part… sorry.

The modchip is needed, the PS2 is pal and my game is ntsc. I could look for other ps1 games to test, might head to the shops and borrow a title then return it. Though im not sure if its the modchip causing problems or the laser, I remember having hard time reading burnt discs but thats prob security thing.

Though thanks for your advice, I appreciate your response and il keep lookin into it.

Edit: My cmos battery is dead and I changed it and still dead, not sure why.
