If your Chromebook is locked by an administrator (often showing a "Managed" or enterprise enrollment screen), it was likely sold without being properly deprovisioned by a school or company. The only permanent, legal fix is to have the original organization deprovision it via the Google Admin Console. To fix this, contact the seller to have them remove it from their system, or, if that isn't possible, you'll need to try a powerwash or replace the motherboard.

Steps to Take

  • Contact the Seller Immediately: The fastest solution is for the original administrator (school/company) to "deprovision" the device from their Google Workspace console.
  • Perform a Factory Reset (Powerwash): Sometimes, this can remove the policy.
    1. Sign out of the Chromebook.
    2. At the login screen, press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
    3. Select Restart and then Powerwash.
  • Try Developer Mode: If the above fails, you can try forcing it into developer mode, but this is often blocked.
  • Hold Esc + Refresh + Power.
  • When the warning screen appears, press Ctrl + D to enter developer mode.

If It Stays Locked

  • Return for a Refund: If the seller cannot unlock it, it is functionally limited. Return it, as it remains the property of the original organization.
  • Motherboard Replacement: A final, albeit expensive, option is to replace the motherboard
