Why is cruise control not working

Are the brake lights working OK when you press the brake pedal?

A faulty brake pedal switch can causes the cruise control not to work.

If they are working OK, then the quickest way to find out what the prblem is, is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with a scantool (examples) to check what DTC codes (diagnostic troubleshooting codes) have been logged in the engine control module (ECM)

If you're in the USA major auto parts stores e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilley's etc will scan the port for free, apparently

Well Cruise control mostly fails due to a broken brake light switch, blown fuse, or check engine light so check for these in your car.
