If the wire is fully disconnected, you should be able to attach a strong cord to one end and carefully pull the old wire out then use the cord to pull back the fresh wire.
If it's stapled along the pathway you may need to abandon it just routing a new wire in its place. Even still make sure the exposed wire ends are fully insulated and to be clear here we are talking about a single cable not one that has splices of any sort.
