Model A1312 / Mid 2011 / 2.7 & 3.1 GHz Core i5 or 3.4 GHz Core i7 Processor, ID iMac12,2

Mid 2011 27inch Not booting After CPU Upgrade

My 12,2 iMac works flawlessly with the i5-2500s it came with. But refuses to show any sign of life with an i7-2600.

Nothing happens when I press the power button other than a small hum.

Removing the display gives me access to the LEDs showing 1 and 2 are lit but nothing from 3 or 4.

The 2600 is a known working chip and the 2500s still works fine in the board.

Please help.

Answer this question I have this problem too

@danielfrearson that is a i7-2600 and not a i7-2600S? Your iMac does not supply enough CPU power for the non-S and that is why it does not boot.

@oldturkey03 That's not an issue with the 27inch model. It wasn't really a common problem with the 21.5 inch model due to the weaker PSU either.

Here it seems to be an issue with my specific i7 2600 I fear. I've since tested an i5 2500K which has the same TDP as the 2600 and it worked first try.

Try a new CPU and do a BIOS update for that CPU and tell me if it works.
