Repair and disassembly information for the 2020 refresh of the MacBook Air model A2179 with an Intel processor that was released in March 2020.

Problems after installing new logic board

I don't know if I shouldn't post on a new thread, since I am not the OP for this one. Please let me know.

The new logic board arrived and I have installed it in the mac. Everything ok until this point.

Where I started to have problems ....

As the built-in display is cracked I can't do anything, but I knew that from the start. So, I connected the macbook air to the external display and the problems started to happend here.

I set up the macbook the following way:

- I connected the external power adapter, connected an external keyboard and mouse and connected the external monitor.

1 - I can close the lid plug/un-plug the monitor, do a million of different combinations, but it didn't wotk work. The clamshell mode is never activated.

2 - I tried several shortcuts to extend the monitor and nothing.

3 - I shut down the mac, closed the lid, removed the power and put it back.

The mac started automatically and I have image on the external monitor, but it's extended instead of mirrored, so when I press "D", it won't show the menu.

Opening the lid reveals the LCD black. It's, basically, off. Removing the cable of the external monitor does nothing, the built-in display continues off until I reboot again.

I don't mind this, since it will be a headless computer.

Question: how can I force the external display to be the main one, so I can configure the computer?

The previous owner formatted the ssd , so I get "?"and cannot go any further regarding booting the system.

Kins regards,

Pedro

I think you have confused your self. Let's set things up with the system turned fully off connect the charger, external monitor as well as USB keyboard and mouse. As once you power the system and close the lid the external will be by default the primary display (Clamshell Mode).

Make sure the Microphone and speaker cables are properly connected and the ZIF latches are set as the microphone array and the right speaker is where the lid hall sensor live.

I think I didn't forget to connect anything. At least the speakers are working fine (I can hear the Apple bong).

However, I can't test the microphone, but I will look to see if I have forgotten to connect the cable.

Hi Dan,

I am sorry for the late reply. I verified all the connections, and they were good.

So, I came across another identical MacBook Air on eBay, without a logic board but with a working display. I put everything together, and it worked.

Of course, there are always problems that arise from buying used stuff from eBay. If I disconnect the battery, which I only did when assembling the computer, after connecting it back, it wouldn't turn on. The solution for this is to plug in the power adapter. After this, it will always power on from the battery without any problem. There's another situation where this will happen again: it is if I try clearing the NVRAM with cmd + option + P + R.

The computer won't boot anymore, even with a full battery, until you connect the power cable again.

Apart from this, I am very happy, and I am using it as my main day-to-day computer. What's not to like? It is light, fast, supports the latest OS and has a respectable storage size of 512GB! :-)

Cheers,

Pedro
