Can the meter be used to test for a bad xmas light in a string of lights?

Yes, you can use an iFixit multimeter to find a bad bulb in a string of Christmas lights.

The two main ways are continuity or resistance:

Continuity:

- Set the multimeter to continuity (the diode/beep symbol)

- Unplug the string from the wall

- Remove a bulb and touch the probes to the two wires inside the socket

- A beep = that section of the circuit is good

- No beep = the bad bulb is somewhere in that section

- Work your way down the string, halving the section each time to narrow it down

Resistance:

- Set to ohms (Ω)

- Same process — test across each bulb's socket

- A good bulb shows low resistance

- A bad bulb shows OL (open line / infinite resistance)

  • You can also test each individual bulb instead of the socket using the same method just touch the probes to the light bulb leads
