Repair information, service manuals, and troubleshooting help for refrigerators manufactured by LG Electronics.

Water not entering water filter

Hi, I have an LG refrigerator, model LF29H8330S /00

The included LT1000P water filter is bone dry. This fridge automatically bypasses the filter if it doesn’t see one installed, so water and ice still dispense, but with unfiltered water. (Luckily not much of an issue, for we have good enough tap water, but I digress.)

Fridge is very new - installed ~1 year ago but didn’t have water hooked up until recently.

I’ve taken off the panel that covers the tank and plumbing, and I didn’t see anything obviously wrong, but I don’t know what I’m looking at, really.

I have tried:

  • Removing and replacing the filter with water off
  • Unplugging and plugging it back in
  • Removing and replacing the filter several times
  • I turn the filter until it stops.

Right now I’m thinking the included filter is faulty, incorrectly made, et cetera. Wondering if anyone else has this problem and how to fix it - I’ll try a new filter when possible.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @overthrower

Could be a faulty flow sensor.

Go to p.28 in the service manual and run the diagnostic tests as described and see if error code E gF (#11 in the error table) shows up. Ensure that the filter is inserted first

If it does go to p.89 to see how to test it.

If the sensor is faulty and not that it's a loose connection etc, unfortunately whilst the manual has a parts layout diagram it doesn't show the part number for each part. Hopefully the part number may be on the part itself.

If it is search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best.

To clarify, you’re saying to use the key combo to check error history?

Yes.

Apologies I forgot that a lot of LGs store the error code at the time of the event and they don't actually run a diagnostic test per se to check if it works.

If there's no error code try dispensing water with the filter in, (even though it doesn't work) and then check if there's an error code stored. pertaining to the dispenser

Does the ice maker fill with the filter installed? By rights it shouldn't as it appears that the flow sensor is signalling to the control board the amount of water flowing through the filter, presumably to let you know when to change the filter

@jayeff All the water things work normally with the filter installed. The problem is that no water actually enters the filter, judging by the lack of water coming out when the filter is removed, no sloshing if I shake it around, no sound or feeling of water rushing in when the filter was installed.

It seems like this fridge automatically bypasses the filter if there isn’t one installed, as even after removing the filter entirely, I can still dispense water.

When using that button combo on p.28 of the service manual, the display changes to “E” (freezer size) “S” (fridge side), which doesn’t seem to match any of the possible errors listed.

Did you test the flow sensor anyway?

I don't know but it may be that if the control doesn't detect that the sensor is in place (normal test is 4K-30K Ohms) to measure the flow it won't open the valve to allow water to enter. Won't hurt to test it even if only to eliminate it as the problem.

Looking at the wiring diagram on p.27 you should be able to test the sensor from the control board Conn. 4 pins 5 & 7 or 3 & 5 (not sure if test is between vcc and signal wire or gnd and signal wire so check every which way). Disconnect the cable from the board and measure on the cable plug, not the board. Disconnect the power to the refrigerator first.

Just verifying also that you pressed and held the Water filter button for 3 seconds to get rid of the water filter indicator light? I assume besides turning off the light that this also resets the water filter flow count in the control board so that it knows when to signal the user that the filter needs replacing.

here's what worked for me...if the filter is not fully locked in the water will not enter the filter ( you should not be able to just pull the filter out if its locked in).

when installing the filter , i had to fully extend the filter downwards(towards the tray) for the filter to turn properly and locked in.

once i did that , the filter worked great.
