How much is it overheating? Is it just warm to the touch? If it's just warm to the touch, it's probably normal heat from charging. If it's heating up more than what you'd probably expect from charging, the battery is bad. The only way to fix that is to replace the battery. Be aware that bad phone batteries are volatile- seriously, if you puncture one, it could catch fire and/or explode. You might want to keep a bucket of sand close by.
