That is caused by a bad DMD with DLP units. It's not going to be a cheap fix, as the parts cost almost always nearly meets or exceeds the value of the projector :-(. That said, some high end 4K ones tend to be reasonable; it's all of the commodity 1080p units which get totaled out.
Look up the model of projector and search for "DMD". We also can't help you find the manual to get to it but it's always behind the lens, where a complete teardown is required.
