Removing Heatsink from Motherboard

Searching online for replacement motherboards for a MS Surface Laptop Studio, I have noticed that some come without the heatsink. Though, I can't seem to find any guides on how to remove the heatsink and then reapply to the motherboard. Am I missing something here?

Also any suggestions on a good place to procure replacement Motherboards, other than eBay, would be greatly appreciated. Seeking an i7/16GB to replace like-for-like for the faulty MB I have, but would also settle for an i5/16. I'm in Sydney, Australia.

Yes, you can definitely reuse the heatsink. A heatsink is essentially a piece of metal (usually copper or aluminum with heat pipes) designed to dissipate heat. It is not permanently bonded to the motherboard logic; it is a separate component.

Here is what you need to know:

Compatibility: As long as you are replacing the motherboard with the same model (Surface Laptop Studio), the old heatsink will fit perfectly on the new board. The mounting screw holes are standardized for that specific chassis.
Transfer Process: * Carefully unscrew the heatsink from the old board.
- You might feel some resistance due to the old thermal paste acting like glue; gently wiggle it until it pops off.
- Crucial Step: You must clean both the heatsink base and the new CPU die with Isopropyl Alcohol.
- Apply fresh thermal paste before mounting it onto the new motherboard.
