Check that the level of the hydraulic fluid in the power steering fluid reservoir is between the cold and hot levels as marked.

If there's no fluid check for cracks or leaks in the hoses leading to the power steering pump. If they appear to be OK check the belt that turns the pump is tensioned OK etc.

If all visual checks appear to be OK there may be a problem with the power steering pump.
