when playing in handheld mode the right joy con disconnects at random even though its still attached to the switch I will be playing then it just randomly disconnects then I have to take it off the switch then reconnect it to the console

Hi!
First of all, try a new joy-con and see if that one works. If not, the rail in the Switch need to be replaced.
If it works, then you need to replace the Joy-Con it’s rail.

Alright, then it's related to the Switch I'm afraid!
It's recommended to replace the right rail of the Switch.
