Is it possible to seperate this part?

The cable housing has split exposing the wire directly above the rubber seal, I need to pull through the cable but it is stuck tight.... is there a way to open this part up, pull though the cable to re-solder it to the chargers board, and then get it back together?

@livfe tried a heat gun on the "grommet" yet? Warm it up enough so that it expands then try a small blunt screwdriver and see if you can insert that between the grommet and the cable. At least that way we know ;)

The two halves of the charger are glued together. The best way I've found to open them is with a pair of snap ring pliers - pliers that work in reverse of normal pliers in that they force things apart rather than together. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

To use them, you open up the cord winding wings. This gives you a place where you can insert the pliers and force the halves of the case apart. Just work steadily and the glue will give way; do this on both wings and you'll get it open far enough to get that rubber retainer out. If you go ahead and continue separating the halves with a flat blade screwdriver, you'll be able to get to the place on the circuit board where the wires are soldered if you want to do it right.

Yes I already have opened it exactly like you mention but when trying to sperate this retainer it has damaged it somewhat..... this one didn't want to release. Better luck next time for this I think

by

@livfe Ah, I see; that retainer is molded onto the cable and isn't replaceable by itself; you have to replace the entire cable with the retainer already molded onto it.

@dadibrokeit OR, just cut it in half and glue the outer part back with the fresh part of the cable pushed through....

by

@dadibrokeit @danj We cut the wire as close to the hard plastic part and the drilled it out as far as to release it then pulled out the remaining wire thus keeping the plastic & rubber part intact, then threaded through the good cable and secure soldered directly to the board, it all clipped back together quite well and with some strong glue and clamps we have got it back to function and looking almost factory. 2 wraps of clear parcel tape around for good measure. Job done.

Best to replace the charger. I tried cutting the case to get to the wire only damaging it.

Yes chargers are very cheap these days agree, but just out of curiosity asking how to do.

Just because you can doesn't make it a safe choice! You wouldn't hand a kid a loaded gun would you? Repair shouldn't place you or your customers at risk. Ignorance or the economies should not lead you.

1 - Cracking the case is not easy as it's welded plastic so it will look crappy afterwards and it's not safe! People can get hurt and it could start a fire if the case comes undone. You too can get hurt here as well. You to could get hurt here as well!

2 - There's an ID chip in the connector! This chip tells the computer what the charger is so it's calculated in the charge. This is where having the wrong cable given the charger can mess you up. Either not charging properly or causes the batteries to over charge (blister) which can damage the computer and could start a fire if the battery cell ruptures.

3 - The costs! Between the labor and recovered cable is still more expensive that just getting a replacement charger. Don't forget your legal fee's when someone sues you! For the personal harm, fire or worse the damaged computer!

Tes Dan, (1) Easy to do gently with some thin pliers, can open it just enough to solder the wires back in keeping half of the charger still fixed tight. (2) It is the same cable from the same charger (Just the cable was exposed at the very end as pictured). We have a charger cover & or will tape it back together nice and neat so it never comes apart again. Was just asking out of curiosity if how to open this part to take out the broken part of the cable and thread back through the good part). This comment and reply should be posted under the relevant topic ;) No big deal to buy a new charger anyway they are quite cheap out here ;) (3) I do the repairs myself so I just pay myself to do it :)

@livfe - Trying to justify it generically still doesn't hold water.

You time still has worth! You could be fixing something else which has a better return in value. The time could be spent learning a skill more deeply or something new!

@danj I am hitting my old age goal of learning 1 new thing everyday :)
