Old iPad cannot update through iTunes Recovery

I have this old iPad 2 (Model A1396) that hasn't been used for a couple years, and when I turn it on, after charging it for a bit it comes up with a charger symbol with the iTunes logo. Plug it into a MacBook and it says there's a problem and I need to choose "Update" or "Restore" but when I choose update, once it downloads the software update it gives off "iTunes error 27" saying it can't be updated. Did some research and it means that the battery cannot hold enough power to do the update, but everything else is fine. Tried doing it in DFU mode, still didn't work either. Is there another way I can fix the problem without completely wiping everything on it, or if I do need to get the battery replaced, how would I go by doing it? I don't want to lose any data

Answer this question I have this problem too

I would first try replacing the battery. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the problem, it's probably best to do it while you're working on it; you'll have to do it eventually, anyway. Seeing as you're concerned about data loss, I might also try transferring data onto the macbook's hard drive. I've never tried this, so I can't say for certain if it would work, but I'd say you don't have much to lose at this point, so it's worth a try. It really depends on what you're trying to update. If it's a system update, the iPad would probably work better without it; the newer software tends to slow down these older processors.
