Fix my gear shifter
the shifter in the steering column won't shift the truck into gear

@kimcarlton it is absolutely possible that your gear shift rod has come off the shift arm, or even got disconnected form the selector bracket on your bell housing. Here is the diagram for the shifter linkage. Check your truck to make sure it is all still connected as should be.

@kimcarlton does it have any resistance or is it somewhat "wobbly"? What have you checked?
