My aging (6-7 year old) Redmi 5 Plus is still in fair working condition but the screen seems to be less responsive - most likely due to a bit of separation from the body (supposedly cause by battery enlargement). How much should I expect to spend to remedy this situation?

Are you planning on replacing the battery yourself? If so, the cost is only going to be whatever price you find for a battery; my somewhat cursory search (using the search string "xiaomi redmi 5 plus battery replacement") shows available batteries going anywhere from $5 to $20 USD. Guides to show you step by step instructions are also available online; here's one that I would recommend.

You may also need some tools; go through the guide and get the tools they show being used for the repair like the ones listed at the top of the page (protip: you can buy everything you need right here on iFixit).
