My mbp mid 2012, is not starting. Charger is working fine, green light shows up, but it won't change to yellow (usually does when battery starts charging). If I bypass battery (removed it), it still does not start. Is there a way I can figure out if it is a display or motherboard issue?

It's clear the system is getting power, the thing is if the system responds to the power button (are you getting any noise like the fan), if not try the power pads shorting across these two pads
If you don't get a response you have a deeper logic board issue. Don't waste your time swapping parts, instead just disconnect the drive and then try removing the RAM. Again if nothing changed thats a deeper issue in the logic board logic.
At this point you'll need to take the board out, then doing a careful inspection looking for stained or damaged components. I would focus in on the tantalum capacitors as they often fail, also look for discoloration on the logic board it's self like green or white deposits which are signs or corrosion. Do the solder joints look good? Sometimes a cold joint can be the issue.

Are you able to solder these tiny components? If not you might need to find someone to help you or look at getting a replacement logic board.

Connect your MacBook to an external monitor via Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt.
Power on and check if the external display shows anything.
