AirPods does not work without it being having continuous power

I got some hand-me down AirPods Pro, but I can't use them without supplying the case with power and then taking out the earbud and connecting them. After connecting I can use it all just fine but after putting both earbuds back in the case, I need to supply the case again with power. How do I fix this?
