Why does my transmission slip

every time i drive for roughly 30 min-1 hour my car starts to stall very bad and my car threw a check engine light saying incorrect gear 3 ratio and now the check engine light is off why is that?

What is the year, model, engine size and transmission type (AT or MT) of the vehicle?

If AT have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition (dark or burnt smell)?
