There are a few different things that could cause this. The fault could lie with the port on the computer, the cable, the drive enclosure, the drive itself, or your system software. If it's happening for consistently with multiple drives using different cables, I would be inclined to think the problem is on the computer side, either a hardware issue with the port or a software issue causing drive mounting issues. You could try rebooting the computer and logging into a separate test user account to see if the issue continues thereāif it does, then the issue if probably hardware related. Good luck!

Good answers above. Also attempt to connect the drive to another computer. MAC or PC and see if the issue travels with the drive.
I was recently given the same drive, which had been purchased as a set. The first drive is running as I write this note on the machine it was connected to about two years ago. The second drive was never used, so given to me. It was the second drive that has NEVER been connected to a machine that, from the sealed box, would not connect to a machine.
Being a tech, and the drive already out of warranty, I removed it from the shell and discovered the 5TB drive is fine. The controller in the enclosure is somehow bad. The problem I am having is finding if Lacie (Seagate) makes or sells replacement controllers. If you are adventurous, you can open the enclosure and connect to a different external drive enclosure to rule out the drive being the problem.
Good luck to others who find this thread.
