Ambient light sensor on iPad 9

Where is the ambient light sensor located on the iPad 9? I know it's different than the 7th and 8th gen. I have a customer that uses a case that causes the 9th gen model to dim but it does not happen on the other models.

hello Shai,

as in other apple patents, this function is performed by the front camera and two sensors located on the left next to the audio port and on the right next to the main camera.

both sides, close to the upper edge

Note the round cutouts left and right of the camera, about an inch from either edge. Cover both, and it begins to dim within 10 seconds. Covering just one has no effect, with or without covering the camera.

There are little rubber covers with white dots on them that cover these sensors. I had a badly damaged digitizer on one I'm trying to repair. One of those covers is missing. Will the ambient light sensor work if I assemble the iPad without that white dot cover on one of them or does that cover perform a vital (not just aesthetic) function?
