Options

On startup a black screen appears

Upon startup, hear the fan sound, see the lower buttons flash, then the hard disk button turns off and the screen remains black

Are there any lights still on the keyboard, power button etc?

If so are they blinking or solid?

Have you tried to boot from a cd or dvd disk?
