This PC is a Dell Inspiron 3000 Series laptop with an AMD processor and a non-touch display. It's model number is 3541.

Replacing the CMOS battery in this model?

Hello, I actually own the 3542 not the 3541 that I selected but it was the only option and plus they seem nearly identical.

Whenever I boot up the laptop I get five beeps. I looked up the beep codes and apparently that means the CMOS Battery is failing. Was just curious if anyone had a guide? Instructions? Or anything. Even where to buy a quality replacement battery.

Thanks

Just curious if this solution works. I also have the 5 beeps on startup and shutdown but am a bit intimidated by the disassembly process, have never done it before.

Chosen Solution

Hi,

Here is a link to a video which shows how to remove the motherboard in your laptop so that you can access the CMOS battery.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vm3xfkKz...

At 2:56 minutes into the video the battery is visible.

I have highlighted the battery location in the image below.

The battery looks to be a standard lithium coin cell type battery. The type number will be stamped on the battery. They are most probably available in supermarkets etc.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Hi @john666 ,

Given that it is the Chosen Solution to the question with 4 upvotes I'd say that it must have resolved the problem for some people. 4 people at least, (you can only upvote once per answer) or perhaps 3, as the OP can upvote as well if they wish. The OP is also the only person (besides the moderators) who can accept the Answer. I am not a moderator ;-)

If you wish to try doing it yourself, my advice is that as long as you take your time, that if you do strike problems to stop and think it through before proceeding with the repair and to treat the equipment with care then you should be OK

You will also gain the immense satisfaction of having done it yourself.

However, if you feel that it is a bit too much for you, contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote for the repair.

I had this exact problem, i managed to chage the bios battery as shown in the video, however the laptop is still beeping 5 times, any other possible solution?

@tristanbonello

Disconnect the charger (if connected), disconnect the main battery and the cmos battery from the motherboard and then press and hold the Power button operated for a full 30 seconds and then release it. Reinsert the cmos battery, reconnect the main battery, connect the charger and check if it now turns on OK.

@jayeff hi, thanks for the reply, honestly i have been troubleshooting with chatgpt, and he mentioned that, just after i disassembled the whole thing, i went back in and did exactly that, but it still didn’t work. I also found out two things: the actual model of my laptop is: Dell Inspiron 3000 series 15

Inspiron 3542 and also my main battery is probably dead since it’s been a long time since my purchase of the laptop. Chatgpt said its probaly a short circuit of the RTC component and that probably the motherboard would have to be replaced:// not sure what else to do.

@tristanbonello

Just verifying that you reinserted the RTC battery (cmos battery) on the motherboard with the +ve sign on top as marked on the battery?

Hi @tristanbonello

Here's an image showing the RTC battery circuit (or part of it) from p.24 of the motherboard schematic that may help to find out what's wrong.

If the components in the schematic aren't designated on the motherboard you will need to find the boardview file. I had a quick look but I couldn't find it online. You may have better luck.
