A head cleaner may fix your problem.

That was my first reaction as well, but the tape deck just ejected it after attempting to load. It would switch between sides a couple of times, and then spit it out.
Have the same issue on a Chrysler AM/FM cassette deck. Worked fine using a cassette adapter for plugging into my phone for music, but now no cassette stays in the deck.
