power button will not put ipad to sleep

I've got an iPad that I'm fixing the screen on. I've got something bizarre going on that the power button won't put it in or take it out of sleep mode. However, it will power the iPad down. I'm pretty sure I didn't rip the power flex cable. Been down that road before. Any ideas?

I was able to resolve the issue by turning off the setting for the smart cover. After that it worked like it should.

Try turning the Smart Cover settings off. If the issue disappeared, then the magnetic sensor is damaged. You can also try the compass, which should also be dead.

If the problem is not caused by the sensor, try restoring the device
