The power lights are on and the fan makes noise, but the screen stays black.

The laptop screen dimness/brightness settings might be set too low. To turn the brightness back up, press the larger sun symbol above the keys ‘8’ and ‘9’. Press the key 10 times to make sure it is at the highest setting.

Unplug any USB devices and the charger. Turn off the computer by holding down the power button for at least 15 seconds. Wait 5 minutes, and then try turning the laptop back on.

Let the laptop sit in a cool area for 10-15 minutes; see our troubleshooting topic for overheating (below) if the problem persists.

If the system files have become corrupted, the system might not load the screen during startup. A factory reset might help in this case. A factory reset restores your laptop to the software that came pre-installed. If you do a factory reset, it will wipe all data on your Chromebook. This does have a small chance of fixing the problem, but only pursue this as a last effort if you don’t mind losing all your data.

To reset the laptop to factory settings, hold down the esc key and the refresh key (the key with circular arrow) at the same time and press the power button.

Laptop battery quickly runs out or the charge does not increase when plugged into the charger.

Use a different charger to see if the laptop holds a charge with the new charger.

Plug the charger into a different outlet and see if the laptop holds a charge with a new outlet.

Clean the port with a soft, dry, unused toothbrush to remove dust.

Laptop overheats to a concerning extent.

The ventilation might be blocked by the surface that the laptop rests on. Power off the laptop by holding down on the power button for at least 15 seconds. Move the laptop to a hard surface and allow it to cool down for 5-10 minutes. Turn the laptop back on.

The ventilation airways may be clogged. Use a canister of compressed air to dislodge any clutter.

For a deeper clean, disassemble the device and use a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol 99% to clean the fans. Let the laptop dry, reassemble it, and power it back on.

Power off the laptop by holding down on the power button for at least 15 seconds. Leave the laptop alone for 5-10 minutes so it can cool down. Power the laptop back on.

Placing the laptop in direct sunlight, near a fireplace, or near a heater may lead to a critical increase in the temperature of the laptop. Power off the device and move it to somewhere out of direct sunlight and of moderate temperature. Power off the laptop and leave it undisturbed for 30 minutes or more.

The laptop often shuts down without warning when in use.

Backup your files and settings to a cloud or hard drive so you can transfer them back onto the device after the reset. Only pursue this as a last effort if you don’t mind losing all your data.

There are no signs of the laptop turning on when pressing the power button.

Connect the laptop to the charger and leave it alone for at least 30-60 minutes to allow it to charge.

Ensure there is no damage to the charging port or power button. Make sure the power button can be pressed down and nothing is blocking the charging port.

Take follow our back panel replacement guide to remove the back panel of the device. This will give you a general view of parts including the battery, motherboard, ports, and cables. Inspect the parts and make sure there is no obvious damage to important parts. If you notice any damage, replace the damaged part(s).

Perform a soft reset by holding the power button for at least 15 seconds. If the laptop gives an error code, match the numbers with those in the diagnostic code section of the official HP Chromebook website and follow the instructions.
