Dewalt DCD778 Troubleshooting

Battery will not charge or hold a charge.

After a while the battery starts to deteriorate and loses its ability to hold a charge. You will need to purchase a new battery if it is old. Proceed to back of instructions manual to find the correct battery for unit then go to www.DeWalt.com to purchase new battery.

The charger may not be working due to broken parts or wear and tear. If this is the problem replace battery charger. Proceed to back of instructions manual to find the correct battery charger for unit then go to www.DeWalt.com to purchase new battery charger.

Proceed to find an outlet and plug the charger in if the charge does not light up with the battery securely placed on charged first try using a different outlet. If the charger continues to not work purchase a replacement battery charger. Proceed to back of instructions manual to find the correct battery charger for unit then go to www.DeWalt.com to purchase new battery charger.

The drill shows no response when pressure is applied to trigger.

Your battery may be low or out of power. If the battery is low on power the drill may work slowly or not at all. Place battery on charger.

Make sure the charger is properly charging the battery and plugged in. If the battery continues to not work please proceed to replace battery. Proceed to back of instructions manual to find the correct battery for unit then go to www.DeWalt.com to purchase new battery.

Make sure charger is plugged in and battery is securely pressed in to blades on charger. The red light should be flashing. If the problem continues replace battery charger. Proceed to back of instructions manual to find the correct battery charger for unit then go to www.DeWalt.com to purchase new battery charger.

Drill bits are not staying in the chuck.

To ensure the bits are properly secured into the chuck, follow these steps:

1. Disconnect battery from the drill.

2. Grasp the black sleeve surrounding the chuck with one hand and secure the tool with the other hand. Rotate the chuck sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuck.

3. Insert the drill bit about 1/2” into the opening on the chuck. Secure the bit by rotating the sleeve in the clockwise direction with one hand and holding the drill in the other.

4. To release the drill bit, repeat steps 1 and 2.

The chuck does not spin when trigger is pulled

Make sure that the actuator (forward/reverse button) is completely pushed to either the forward rotation or reverse rotation position. If the trigger still cannot be pulled then a mechanical failure within the trigger may have occurred and a replacement switch will be required. If the trigger does pull but the motor does not power on then the switch may be faulty. To determine if the switch is faulty you will need to open up the drill casing..

If the motor is powering but the chuck is not spinning then a transmission problem is occurring. Slow spinning or no spin is a sign that the gears within the gear box may not have properly seated. Check to make sure that the gear box is not in-between gears and is completely transitioned to the desired gear. If it still does not spin, then the transmission may be faulty and a replacement will be required.

A faulty motor can result in the chuck having no spin or slow spin. The motor becoming faulty can be caused by overloading the motor or the brushes within the motor wearing out. If the drill is working slowly.

Make sure the battery is connected and push the battery until it is clicked to the drill. Make sure the battery that it is fully charged. If you not sure the battery is charge, try it with a new battery.
