iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Belt Clip Replacement

What you need

  1. iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Belt Clip Replacement, Rear Panel: step 1, image 1 of 1
    • Accessing the internals of the 4th generation Shuffle is extremely difficult, as the rear panel is both glued to the front case and secured by metal retaining clips. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to remove the rear panel without inflicting cosmetic and/or structural damage.

    • Before proceeding, be sure your Shuffle is switched off.

    • Use a heat gun, hairdryer, iOpener, etc. to heat the back of the Shuffle until it's slightly too hot to the touch.

    • If using a heat gun, only apply heat for a few seconds at a time. Check the temperature of the metal - if it gets too hot to handle, let it cool.

    • Use a combination of iPod opening tools and metal spudgers to pry the rear panel away from the Shuffle by the seam nearest the ON/OFF switch.

    • There are no clips on the top and bottom of the rear panel. With the Apple logo upright and facing you, all the clips are to the left and right.

    • If you use a metal spudger, you will scratch the housing.

    • You can try to pull on the rear panel by the clip. If you use too much force, you will bend the rear panel. If it feels stuck, stop and heat the glue to soften it.

  3. iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Belt Clip Replacement: step 4, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the rear panel from the Shuffle.

    • There may be a piece of black rubber covering the logic board, or it may come out with the rear panel. This piece is part of a rubber seal that goes around the edges of the rear panel and covers the controls from the inside.

  4. iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Belt Clip Replacement, Belt Clip: step 5, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the four Phillips screws securing the belt clip to the rear panel.

    • To avoid bending the last two screws, be sure to squeeze the belt clip against the rear panel as you remove them.

    • Remove the belt clip from the rear panel.

    • When reinstalling the screws, be sure to firmly squeeze the belt clip against the rear case until all screws are tightened.

I'm gonna try to remove the back cover with minimal prying to reduce cosmetic defects. The plan is to somehow remove the spring loaded clip by pushing out the lever pin, then drilling holes along the edge of the over wherre the 3 little hooks are (In this image, where the right thumb is touching. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...).

It would be great if someone could provide a closer look at where exactly the hooks are so I can position my 1.5mm drill bit better. Also, if you can to figure out how to remove the spring loaded clip mechanism without going through the 4 screws, that'd be awesome! I suspect the pin is held in place by just adhesive, but don't want to risk pushing too hard and causing defects. :(

Is it possible to just push the "pin" through to remove the clip? I want to paint my Ipod and want the clip removed to do so.
