      • If the display glass is cracked, prevent it from breaking further during the repair, which could cause serious injury. Cover the glass with tape.

      • Apply overlapping layers of clear tape until the entire display is covered.

      • This will keep glass shards contained and maintain structural integrity.

      • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from glass shards.

      • The next two steps demonstrate the iSclack, a useful tool for opening the iPhone 5. We recommend it for anyone planning more than one repair. If you are not using an iSclack, skip to step 5.

      • Close the iSclack handles to open its suction-cup jaws.

      • Place the iPhone between the suction cups, against the plastic depth gauge.

      • The upper suction cup should be just above the Home button.

      • Open the handles to close the suction cups. Press them firmly against the front and back of the iPhone.

      • Hold the iPhone securely and close the iSclack handles again to lift the front panel out of the case.

      • The iSclack opening angle is designed to separate the panel and case without damaging the Home button cable.

      • Release the suction cups from the phone.

      • Attach a suction cup to the screen just above the Home button.

      • Make sure the suction cup is fully and firmly attached to the glass.

      • If the glass is cracked, carefully cover it with several strips of tape. Make sure no air bubbles remain under the suction cup. This helps lift the screen and prevents the cracks from spreading.

      • Make sure the suction cup is firmly attached to the front panel.

      • Hold the iPhone with one hand and pull up on the suction cup to slightly separate the front panel from the rear case.

      • Take your time and apply steady force. The display assembly fits more tightly than on most devices.

      • Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry the rear case down, away from the screen, while pulling up on the suction cup.

      • Plastic clips secure the display to the rear case. Use the suction cup and plastic opening tool together to release the display assembly.

      • Once the bottom and side clips are released, lift the bottom of the display assembly away from the bottom of the phone case.

      • Carefully position the display assembly at about 90 degrees to the case.

      • Do not try to completely separate the front panel from the rear case. Several cables remain connected at the top of the iPhone and can be damaged if handled carelessly.

      • Remove the following screws securing the display cable bracket to the logic board:

      • Two 1.2 mm Phillips screws

      • One 1.6 mm Phillips screw

      • Do not use a magnetized screwdriver on this screw. Do not lose it, and make sure it goes back in the correct location. A magnetized screw can interfere with the compass.

      • Use a plastic opening tool to disconnect the three front panel cables:

      • Front-facing camera and sensor cable

      • Display cable

      • Digitizer cable

      • During reassembly, the display cable may come loose from its connector. This can cause white lines or a blank screen. If this happens, reconnect the cable and restart the phone. The best way to restart it is to disconnect and reconnect the battery.
