Introduction

Use this guide to replace the thermal fuse on a Whirlpool Dryer WGD4800XQ. A thermal fuse is an essential part of a dryer because it prevents fires by detecting when the dryer is overheating and shutting it down. Through normal wear and tear, a thermal fuse can overheat and fail, causing the dryer to stop producing heat.

Before starting your repair, it is important to unplug the dryer. Failure to do so can cause an electric shock while replacing the thermal fuse. While repairing the thermal fuse, be careful not to step on the gas pipe if the dryer is connected to your house's main gas line. This can cause a gas leak if the gas pipe is broken.

Unplug the dryer from the power outlet.

Step 2

Unscrew the backplate by rotating each screw counterclockwise with a ratchet and 8mm socket.
The screws are located around the edges of the backplate.
The backplate is a heavy object. Hold the backplate while removing the screws or get assistance. Dropping the backplate can cause injury or break the gas pipe.

Lift the backplate off of the dryer.

Pull out the blue terminal cables on the thermal fuse with a needle nose plier.
Keep track of what terminal fuse goes on top and bottom.

Remove the screw from the thermal fuse with the ratchet and 8mm socket.

Place the new thermal fuse and secure the screw with the ratchet and 8 mm socket.

Insert the blue terminal cables to the thermal fuse with a needle nose plier.

Put the back plate on the dryer.
If possible, have someone hold it up to align all the holes on the backplate and dryer while you use the ratchet and 8 mm socket to replace the screws.
