Introduction
This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough detailing how to replace the grille and windscreen of a Shure SM7B microphone.
The windshield provides audio relief for the microphone, dampening unwanted wind noises and plosives (popping sounds), while the grille is a metal cage underneath the windscreen, which protects the microphone capsule and also helps to dampen unwanted wind noises and plosives.
Common symptoms that may indicate the windscreen needs to be replaced include tears, rips, crinkles, and pieces of the foam missing. Common symptoms the grille needs to be replaced are dents in the metal, cracks, and pieces of the metal missing or poking through the windscreen.
Take caution when handling the microphone if the grille is damaged, as the likelihood of sharp metal edges is prevalent.
Before you begin, ensure you have removed the microphone from its XLR connection, and microphone stand.
What you need
-
-
With one hand, grip the base of the microphone, and with the other, grip the plastic ring at the base of the windscreen.
-
Firmly pull the windscreen off the microphone; there should be little resistance when attempting this, and the windscreen will slide off the metal grille.
