In you want, you can pop out the control panel by putting a knife behind it.

This is not necessary but helps to identify the connections. In my case, pressing the top button connected connector pin 1 to ground (pin7) via a 10k resistor.

The problem in my case was the wiring loom that runs through the top hinge of the fridge door.

As you can see it is broken in multiple places. Its design is a bit poor as the plastic in the hinge is too sharp.

You can fix it by soldering and covering the connections in shrink tubing.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
