Introduction
If your Ryobi P277 cordless drill is no longer switching between forward and reverse modes reliably, this guide will help you replace the reversing switch—an issue commonly seen in this discontinued model.
The reversing switch controls the direction of the motor, and a faulty one can make basic drilling tasks difficult or impossible. Symptoms often include the drill getting stuck in one direction or the switch becoming unresponsive.
Before starting, inspect the switch for signs of physical wear or looseness. Sometimes debris or corrosion can cause issues, so cleaning the area with compressed air or contact cleaner may resolve the problem. If the issue persists, a replacement is likely necessary.
Before you begin this repair, turn off your drill and remove the battery.

Lay the device on its side with the warning label facing you.

Remove the eight 5 mm screws using a TR10 Torx screwdriver.

Separate the two halves of the casing by pulling up on the top half.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order. Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.
