What you need

    • Turn the bicycle upside down. Usually, you would rest your bicycle on both wheels; instead, now you will be resting it on the seat (try resting it on a surface that doesn’t damage it).

    • Switch the bicycle chain to the lowest chainring on the rear crankset of the bicycle. If the derailleur is faulty, it may not allow you to do this, so you may have to manually roll the back tire while shifting the chain onto the smallest chainring.

    • Loosen the rear screw that holds the derailleur against the frame of the bicycle and take out the derailleur slowly.

    • (The derailleur is held in tension, so be careful not to let it snap out instantly)

    • Take the chain off the crankset as well.

    • Use a wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the tension wire.

    • Turn the handle in the direction of H until it can no longer turn.

    • Pull the tension wire to maximum tension (as far back as it will go), then tighten the bolt with a wrench while maintaining that tension.

    • Get the chain back on the biggest chainring/sprocket in the rear crankset.

    • After adjusting the derailleur, get the derailleur into the correct position; it should be against the rear hub of the bicycle.

    • Screw the nut that holds the derailleur firmly in place and make sure it is very tight against the bicycle frame.

    • The derailleur has two screws: the low adjusting screw, which controls how far the derailleur moves towards the wheel, and the high adjusting screw, which controls how far it can move away from the wheel.

    • Adjust these screws with the screwdriver until it positions the derailleur in such a way that the front handle (shown earlier) can be used to switch from the highest to the lowest chainrings/sprockets on the rear crankset.
