Maytag Refrigerator Control Board Replacement

Video Guide
This guide was transcribed from a YouTube video.

What you need

    • Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet.

    • WARNING: Unplugging is required because the control board area can have live voltage when powered.

    • Move the refrigerator away from the wall so you can access the back.

    • Use a 1/4 inch nut driver to remove the four screws securing the rear metal panel.

    • Remove the metal panel to expose the control board area.

    • Caution: Sheet-metal panels can be sharp, so wear cut-resistant gloves if you have them.

    • Check for a plastic cover over the control board and remove it if present.

    • Note: Some units don’t have this plastic cover.

    • Disconnect the four Molex connectors from the control board.

    • Press the small locking tab on each connector, then pull the connector straight out.

    • Caution: Pull on the connector housing, not the wires, to avoid damaging the harness.

    • Caution: Avoid static discharge into the new board by touching an unpainted metal surface before handling it.

    • Use a flathead screwdriver to depress the two retention tabs holding the control board in place.

    • Depress the top tab and the bottom tab, then pull the control board out of its mount.

    • Caution: Don’t pry against other components or wiring while releasing the tabs.

    • Position the new control board in the mounting area.

    • Slide the board under the two guides on the right side.

    • Press the board inward until it snaps into place.

    • Use a flathead screwdriver to push the tabs down if the board won’t seat easily.

    • Listen and feel for the board to pop into place on the retention tabs.

    • Reconnect all Molex connectors to the new control board.

    • Press each connector in until it fully seats and the lock engages.

    • Reinstall the plastic cover if your refrigerator has one.

    • Reinstall the rear metal panel and its four 1/4 inch hex-head screws.

    • Plug the refrigerator back into the wall outlet.

    • Wait about two to three minutes for the refrigerator to boot.

    • Check the front interface for a programming-required code such as PE0000.

    • Press and hold the Door Alarm button.

    • Within three seconds, press and hold the down arrow on the Freezer Temperature button.

    • Release the Door Alarm button while continuing to hold the Freezer Temperature button until programming unlocks.

    • Release the buttons.

    • Press the down arrow on the Freezer Temperature button repeatedly until a small dot appears on the interface.

    • Note: The dot indicates you’re actively in the programming system.

    • Open the refrigerator door and find the nameplate with the model and serial number.

    • Look on the upper right side for the nameplate on this style of refrigerator.

    • Locate the programming code on the nameplate, since it varies by model.

    • Press up on the Refrigerator Temperature button to set the first digit to the desired number.

    • Use the small dot as the indicator for which digit you’re currently editing.

    • Press up on the Freezer control to move the dot to the next digit.

    • Repeat the same process for the remaining digits until the full code matches the nameplate.

    • Press and hold the down arrow on the Freezer Temperature button until the code flashes.

    • Press and hold the down arrow on the Freezer Temperature button again to confirm the code.

    • Wait for the refrigerator to quickly return to normal operating mode.

    • Verify the front interface responds and the temperature settings can be adjusted.

    • Confirm the programming-required error code is no longer displayed.

Conclusion

If the interface is responsive and the refrigerator returns to normal mode after programming, the control board replacement and setup are complete. Recheck any connector that isn’t fully seated if the interface stays blank or the programming code won’t clear.
