Place a ladder securely underneath the smoke detector.

Twist the smoke detector clockwise to remove it from the ceiling.

This device was missing the battery cover, but if your smoke detector has one, remove it from the bottom of the device.
Pull the black strap upwards to remove the old battery.
Dispose of the old battery properly.

Push the red switch down with your finger.

Place the new battery on top of the red switch and black strap.
Place the new battery in the battery compartment ensuring the red switch stays down.
Make sure the positive and negative sides of battery are oriented correctly.
