Introduction
Use this guide to replace the drain pump and filter assembly in a Kenmore front-load washer. The drain pump removes water from the tub during drain and spin cycles. Replace it if the washer shows an F02 or FO2 drain error, leaves standing water in the drum, or starts draining without actually pumping water out. This guide was written for a Kenmore washer with a lower front access panel and front-mounted pump assembly, so the mounting details may differ slightly on other models.
What you need
-
Step 1 Prepare the washer safely
-
Turn off the water supply valves if you need to move the washer or disturb any hoses.
-
-
Step 2 Check the drain pump symptoms
-
Check the pump filter and pump inlet for debris before replacing the pump.
-
Replace the pump if the washer still doesn't drain after the blockage is removed.
-
-
Step 3 Remove the lower front access panel
-
Use a 1/4 inch nut driver to remove the three screws along the lower front access panel.
-
Pull the lower front access panel away from the washer and set it aside.
-
If the washer sits on a pedestal drawer, open it, lift it, and remove it for more room.
-
-
Step 4 Set up the drain area
-
Place a large bowl under the pump cleanout before opening the pump.
-
Spread towels around the work area to catch spills.
-
Squeeze the retaining clips on the nearby plastic holder and move it aside for more room.
-
-
Step 5 Release the pump from the mount
-
Support the pump with one hand and push it up slightly to relieve pressure on the front latch.
-
Pull the front tab forward to release the pump from the mount.
-
Remove that screw first if your pump uses it.
-
Slide the rear rubber feet out from under the mounting tabs and pull the pump forward.
-
-
Step 6 Disconnect the pump wiring
-
Unclip the pump wiring from the holder that keeps it away from the pump.
-
Squeeze the two tabs on the connector cover and lift the cover to expose the pump plug.
-
Pull the plug straight out of the pump connector.
-
-
Step 7 Drain the pump
-
Move the loosened pump forward just enough to position the cleanout cover over the bowl.
-
Slowly loosen the cleanout cover and let the water drain into the bowl.
-
Use a container large enough for the remaining water, or tighten the cover and empty the bowl as needed.
-
-
Step 8 Remove the pump hoses
-
Use pliers to compress the tabs on the first hose clamp.
-
Slide the clamp back along the hose, away from the pump fitting.
-
Twist and pull the hose off the pump fitting.
-
Repeat the clamp and hose removal for the second pump hose.
-
-
Step 9 Identify the replacement pump
-
Remove the old drain-pump and filter assembly from the washer.
-
Compare the new pump with the old one, including the hose fittings, electrical connector, and mounting points.
-
-
Step 10 Mount the new pump
-
Set the new pump on the rubberized mount before reconnecting the hoses.
-
Slide the rear feet under the rear mounting tabs.
-
Slide the front of the pump under the two rubber loops on the mount.
-
Push the pull tab forward and up over the front mount until the pump locks in place.
-
-
Step 11 Reconnect the pump hoses
-
Use pliers to compress the rear hose clamp.
-
Slide the rear hose fully onto the rear pump fitting while holding the clamp open.
-
Release the clamp only after the hose is fully seated.
-
Compress the second clamp and slide the second hose fully onto the other pump fitting.
-
Release the second clamp after the hose is fully seated.
-
-
Step 12 Reconnect the wiring
-
Plug the pump wiring connector back into the pump.
-
Close the connector cover over the plug.
-
Clip the wiring back into its holders so it stays away from the pump and hoses.
-
-
Step 13 Test the pump for leaks
-
Dry the area under the pump before testing the washer.
-
Plug the washer in and run a short fill, drain, or drain-and-spin cycle.
-
Watch the pump, hose connections, cleanout cover, and floor for leaks while the washer fills and drains.
-
Confirm that the pump primes and moves water with a strong flow.
-
-
Step 14 Reinstall the access panel
-
Unplug the washer after the leak test passes.
-
Reinstall the lower front access panel with the three screws.
-
Reinstall the pedestal drawer if you removed it.
-
Run a normal cycle and confirm that the F02 or FO2 error doesn't return.
-
